Many people tell me I am a little paranoid, because I have went through a lot of burglar alarm systems in the past in efforts to protect my things and especially my family. But in my opinion, a few dollars and a little effort is a small price to pay for a secure feeling.
Even as a college freshman, I was slightly obsessed with home security. I did not have much, and what I did have was mostly cheap junk. Your average poor college kid – I bought most of my furnishings from thrift stores and rummage sales. However, I loved movies so I bought a sweet new television and a VCR. It is odd, since today I could not pay someone to take a VCR, but back then they were in huge demand. My little studio – being cheap – was in a rather seedy section of town so I was always worried about someone breaking in. I really did not think anyone would come in through the windows because they were all welded shut with decades of paint, so I mainly just worried about the front and back doors.
Because I did not have much to spend, my initial home burglar alarm was a couple self-contained door alarms. They still make these things – they are sort of like rubber doorstops and they right by the threshold and if someone opens the door it slides over the alarm and pushes down on the lever, making the alarm chirp fiercely. Pretty basic – but I felt comfortable all night.
When me and my wife got married and actually started to acquire nice thing – as well as three kids – I realized the importance of a real burglar alarm system. In the beginning, like most young families we had to save every penny so our home security system still needed to be simple, but effective. Four motion detectors focused on entryways, and a little control panel allowed me to secure everything when we left as well as at night when we slept. Again, simple but effective.
Today, the kids are gone, but me and my wife are still in the house and now we have much better possessions. The bad economy got me worrying that people might start turning to crime so I decided another change was in order. Anymore, if you want to avoid a burglar security alarms are the only way to go. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, crooks can pick almost any lock and if there is no alarm, once they are in they can take their time. These new burglar alarm systems are incredibly functional. I can totally operate and monitor mine from my cell phone or laptop anywhere we go.
