No sun, no fun, think again
When you want to go on holiday in the summer, its easy, plenty of tour operators all offering mega deals for you and the family and a slew of holiday destinations all trying to become the latest hot spots, but winter holidays present totally different challenges and are far harder to plan and enjoy.
There are a ton of horror stories out there about summer holidays that have gone wrong, from food poisoning to half finished hotel rooms with no roof in place right through to nightmares about dog meat being used for the burgers, but few will have heard about the equally horrible stories which come from a bad winter holiday or an adventure holiday that went wrong.
The one thing you have to fall back on during summer is the sunshine, but on a skiing holiday, having to spend your time away from your half finished hotel will probably give you frostbite and although it might be sunny, it will certainly be a darn site colder. Yes, ok, you could just take out travel insurance to protect against most things on your winter holiday, but the weather isnt usually one them, so make sure you get good weather reports and select a destination which has few eather warnings and plenty of sunshine.
If you fail to get the right place, you could be facing a week of terrible weather and a loss of ski time, unable to venture out on to the slopes and that winter sports and ski insurance you took out wont be bailing you out either. If you are really unlucky, what would happen if you broke your leg or cracked a bone? There is some good news on this, most travel insurance will cover you for these things and although you might be ending your holiday early, at least you wont be forking out for medical care, so its really important to take extra care, rest often and dont get too cocky. Its easy to think you can take on major challenges quickly, especially if you are new and learn fast, but dont be tempted. No matter how tempted you are by a new challenge, think twice before doing it, especially if its due to peer pressure, you may well end up regretting it.
If you are off somewhere slightly warmer during our winter months and intend to be backpacking in Asia, mountaineering in the USA or perhaps bungee jumping in Australia then whatever you do, make sure you take out specialist adventure travel insurance. Unlike other standard travel insurance, it will help cover you for things like bungee jumping or rock climbing and you will have the peace of mind you and your family need to be able to go out and enjoy things without worry.
