Maintaining Your Weight Loss Workout On Vacation
Summer is the season for vacation travel. Travel takes a lot of planning, and one of the things you need to consider is how to stick to your weight loss workout program.
You can take fruit, almonds and other nuts, jerky, healthy sandwiches, and other easy-to-carry foods in the car or on the plane. Airport security checkers won’t stop you from taking snacks on an airplane – it’s just liquids that you can’t carry on.
If you must eat at the airport, eat at the sit-down restaurants. They will have salads and healthier options on the menu and since the food is made fresh, you can ask to have unhealthy items left off or substituted.
Don’t forget to take an empty water bottle. You’ll stay hydrated and save a lot of money by not buying bottled water at the airport. Fill the bottle with water from a water fountain once you get past security. If tap water starts to get boring, you can add single-serving packets of green tea, Crystal Light or many sports drinks for flavor. Drinking water will help you avoid the temptation of expensive, overpriced sodas, smoothies and juices sold at airport kiosks.
Writing down what you eat is a great way to stay mindful of your diet while on the road. Even if you don’t keep a food journal as part of your daily weight loss workout program, writing down what you eat while traveling will keep you mindful of watching what you eat. If you have a regular schedule of snacking, stick to it while on vacation. Recording your snacks will also help remind you to keep to your normal eating plan.
Decide that you won’t drink calories while traveling and you’ll save hundreds of calories from your diet. So stay way from non-diet sodas, smoothies and alcohol. If you are at a function where you ‘must drink, just have a wine or beer and nurse it slowly.
Plan ahead and have a strategy for what and when you are going to eat and drink. What business lunches, dinners or other functions are you committed to attending? What is your plan for dealing with them? Think ahead regarding what you will eat and drink and then stick to your plan.
Most effective weight loss programs often encourage a reward meal or day once a week. For that meal or day, you can eat or drink anything you want as a reward for sticking to the program. Have one of your vacation days be your reward day.
Can’t handle temptation — then avoid it. Don’t accept the key to your hotel room’s mini-bar when you are checking in. If there are snacks available in the room, call the front desk and politely ask that they be removed. You’ll not only save a ton of calories, you’ll save a ton of money as well.
Go online before you leave and look up restaurants near your hotel. Check their online menus and plan in advance what you are going to order.
Visit a local grocery store and stock up on healthy drinks and snacks. Or ask the concierge for markets that deliver. If your hotel room doesn’t have a refrigerator, consider buying a cheap Styrofoam cooler and leaving it behind for the hotel staff when you leave. Or for a more permanent solution, buy a collapsible soft-sided cooler that you can take will you. Fill it with ice from the icemaker or bar and you’ll have cold drinks and healthy snacks available whenever you want them.
Make in-room meals no hassle and save your calories for special occasions or business meals you need to attend. Stock up on easy, non-perishable foods like whole-grain bread, natural peanut butter, protein bars and nuts.
