The times of emergency medical airlifts from Guanacaste to San Jose for top medical care will shortly be gone. Sources within the hospital have informed Health Check Costa Rica the Surgery Cima project in Liberia Guanacaste plans to open their doors in Feb 2012. Construction of the first section of the hospice project is all but complete and the hospital is in the midst of moving in equipment for a Feb opening. The hospice will be starting with only around ten beds but will be the 1st Joint Commission International Infirmary to open their doors in Guanacaste which is a region known typically for pristine beaches, and a tourism dependent economy. Side effects of this could reverberate across the area as Guanacaste begins the evolution from a basically tourist oriented economy to a wider based retirement and full time home destination.
The project has a new CIMA Hospital, a building with medical practice offices, a commercial section with trattorias and an apartment hotel building in particular targeting retirees and Medical Travel patients. The surgery, as well as the other buildings, would be found next to the Do-it Center in the canton of Carrillo, on the road between Liberia International Airport and the region’s seaside resort areas, and purposely close to the global Airport that has become the center of Guanacaste’s fantastic growth as a visitor destination in the last ten years.
