5 Ideas for Picking the Best Coverage For Your Trip
Travel Insurance is generally not foremost in your mind. That is, until you begin planning your vacation. Then travel insurance ads you’ve been ignoring suddenly become meaningful. Now the issue becomes – how do you choose the best travel insurance for your personal situation and needs?
Here are 5 things to consider:
1. Be careful that your travel insurance policy doesn’t end up costing you more than the premium you pay.
When searching for a policy, don’t let price be the first factor under consideration. By all means, you need to get the best price you can for your policy. Before making your decision, be mindful of the old, but true, saying – you only get what you pay for.
Purchasing the coverage that meets your specific needs is what’s important. Therefore, selecting the least expensive policy may not be your wisest choices. That doesn’t mean that you can’t get affordable insurance coverage that gives you the kind of coverage you need, along with peace of mind, while you’re traveling.
If you experience a loss while traveling, that isn’t covered by the policy you chose, then you can be out-of-pocket for a lot more than the little extra premium you would have paid on your travel insurance.
2. What do you do in an emergency?
Be sure your travel insurance company provides several phone numbers that you can call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That should include toll-free numbers, or numbers that will accept collect calls. You don’t want to be faced with an emergency situation and not be able to contact your insurance company, except during regular business hours.
3. What is covered by a standard policy?
There are companies that will give you a really low rate for their standard policy but then add additional premiums for items that may already be covered on another company’s standard policy. When comparing travel insurance policies, be diligent about making sure the same items are in each policy. The insurance company should make suggestions and ask questions to make sure you’re adequately covered.
4. Determine what support companies the insurer work with.
Frequently insurance companies have alliances with certain types of providers. Make sure you’re informed about who would be providing services for medical emergencies or evacuation, if required. Make sure you’re aware of how to request such assistance.
5. Does the insurance company you’re researching allow for special needs or requirements?
Try to stay away from insurance companies that offer a one-size-fits-all standard policy. It could mean you’re paying for some coverage that you don’t need. Or, it could leave you under-insured. Try to find a company that offers a wide range of coverage and can specialize it for such things as backpacker insurance, long stay coverage, annual travel insurance coverage, specific country coverage and more.
